Close Up Photos of That AR-15 That Was On Fire

I differentiate my Mustangs by color ("the silver one" or "the white one") or age ("the older one" or "the newer one"). Same with AR-15s - the spray painted one, the shiny one, etc. This AR-15, a Spike's midlength, I now refer to as "the burned one." It remains serviceable, reliable, and accurate, with the only parts replacement being a new top MOE handguard - the bottom remains the same. It's photographed here with the old handguard for...dramatic effect? Whenever I get some free time (probably sometime in 2014), I… Read More

Spike’s Tactical SAR Rail Review

I have been using the Spike's Tactical SAR rails for quite some time, and although they are extremely light, they do not seem to give up any strength or durability. However, I have several problems with the way they were designed and manufactured. Spike's Tactical provided both of these rails for review, as well as some of the rifles seen in the video. This video is a modification of the "new video format" I tested a few months ago.

Oh, What a Difference a Muzzle Device Makes

While at the range doing other stuff, I noticed that I was seeing a lot more muzzle flash because of the overcast conditions. Using the same ammunition (Prvi Partizan M855) in two different 16" barreled AR-15s, I was able to compare the performance of the Spike's Tactical Dynacomp and the Primary Weapons Systems TTO. The image below is representative of the amount of flash seen both with the naked eye and on video, though these are still photographs. Although there is a large difference, the amount of flash seen in… Read More

How Well do Melonite and Nickel Boron (FailZero) Resist Corrosion, Part 2

As I posted yesterday, I recently disassembled the Spike's Tactical 5.45x39 upper receiver assembly and checked it for corrosion. I had intended to post more photos last night, and apologize for not doing so when I said I would. As noted, the weapon was very dirty. If you are not familiar with my use of this upper, it is important for you to understand that I have fired over 7500 rounds of corrosive ammunition through it, over a period of a year, without one proper cleaning. The first thing I… Read More

How Well Do Melonite and Nickel Boron (FailZero) Resist Corrosion?

Because I was sent a few different handguards by Rainier Arms recently, I needed to disassemble and reassemble a few upper receiver assemblies. One of those was the 5.45x39 upper sent to me by Spike's Tactical last year. It's seen crate after crate of corrosive surplus ammunition, and has never been properly cleaned. Coincidentally, I had just received a CAT M4 bolt scraper tool from Rainier, and thought I'd see how much carbon it would remove - there will be a separate post on that. But the topic of this… Read More

Spike’s Tactical Dynacomp Initial Impressions

Spike's Tactical sent two Dynacomps for me to review, so I installed them on a few AR-15s that looked as if they needed a spiffy new part - my 16" Spikes lightweight carbine and my 20" A5-type rifle. Here are my initial impressions after a few weeks with the devices. The Dynacomps are priced at $89.95 and feature a Melonite finish.
