I have been using the Spike’s Tactical SAR rails for quite some time, and although they are extremely light, they do not seem to give up any strength or durability. However, I have several problems with the way they were designed and manufactured. Spike’s Tactical provided both of these rails for review, as well as some of the rifles seen in the video.
This video is a modification of the “new video format” I tested a few months ago.
if YOU had to choose one rail (floated) that is currently available to run for the rest of your life which would it be (my guess is the evo or troy, you seem to like them)
Probably that Centurion rail. I think it is one of the nicest, if not the nicest, rail(s) I have ever seen from a manufacturing and design standpoint. Perhaps I should do an overview of the various types of rails that are available, for I would not necessarily choose just one handguard for every type of shooting.
Yes, please. It’s a confusing and hyped arena. Would appreciate your insight.
I appreciate the weight per length value being reported; it is one of the metrics I have used in the past to compare multiple rail systems.
Andrew – as always, a fantastic review. Really appreciate you not sugar coating anything. Out of curiosity how do you clean under your hand guards? I’ve always been reluctant to run one piece rails with a fixed front sight post because I don’t really want to have to pull the front sight off every time I have to gain access under the barrel. Always fun to have a layer of mud to insulate the barrel 🙂
Why would you think a 12 inch rail would reach the FSB on a rifle length gas system? You need a 13.2″ rail for that.
Matt, a 13.2″ rail will not fit behind a rifle length FSB. The standard for rifle length FSBs has always been referred to as 12.0 regardless of specific rail length.
Really? Hmm… I guess I was mistaken then. So much for that idea. Ha!
Hi Andrew,
Any thoughts on using an “oversized” SAR rail on a mid-length 16in barrel? ie the 12 or 13.2 in.
This would seem to fully cover the gas block. plus give you more room to mount a forward light.
Plus the weight is still very low compared to other rails.
Thanks!
That would be a good use of this rail.
