I must be out of my mind. I had a good streak going – no firearms purchases since September 2010. However, all good things must come to an end, and the vehicle of my no-buying-streak’s destruction is a Ruger SR9. I don’t know that I would ever have bought one of these, but the price was right, and it was brand new.
On second thought, since I haven’t paid for it yet (but have had it transferred to me), if I buy (transfer and pay for) another pistol before I pay for the Ruger, which one will I have purchased first?
Andrew, no matter how hard we try, something always suckers us in. We try to justify it, we “need it” to fill some niche in our arsenals. I broke down after just 5 months yesterday to grab a Walther P22. You see, I didn’t have a .22 pistol, and I needed one to teach my kids pistol shooting, I swear I really needed it….
Will be eager to hear how your new piece works for you. Been a regular Glock user and not eager to change brands. But “Made in USA” is tempting.
If you didn’t own a .22 pistol, then you definitely needed to buy one…
We will of course want to hear what you think about it after a bit.
I am really loving the SR’s. They made the polymer of the grip very thin on the sides giving it a doublestack with an almost 1911esque feel. But actually even better. My only dislike it that it’s a ruger and the slide kinda has a Taurus looking design going.
Magazine Disconnect. Only reason I don’t own one.
If I bought every gun a came across that fit the description of “the price was right, and it was brand new” I’d be a poor (but well armed) man.
I’ll be very curious to hear what you think of it. I have mixed opinions of the SR9 myself but not enough shooting time with one to confidently give it a thumbs up or down.
Well, if you bought guns cheaper than a dealer could, you probably wouldn’t be poor for long 😉
Congrats on the new gun. Heard a lot of good stuff about the SR9.
I should be able to answer your little what was purchased first question, having taken a course on contracts. Sadly I only got a B in that one, so your guess is as good as mine. 😉
I had a P94 that I liked decent enough. I sold it long ago but the pistol was fairly nice. I don’t know if I’d ever buy anything but a MKII or 10/22 from Ruger any more though. I already have both of those but, you know, I need to get one of each for me kids 😉
Great pistol but no need for that external safety or magazine disconnect. I wish they were optional like on the smith and wesson M&Ps. I would buy one then for sure.
The SR9 is one of those guns that I wanted to like so badly, then I actually shot one. I didn’t like how it fit me, and the slide bit me on a reload. That was the end of my interest in the gun. Still think it’s a good gun, just not my type. Hope you enjoy your new purchase!
I managed to hold out longer than you did. Made it 16 months between purchases. Picked up a S&W 15-22 MOE carbine the end of last month. So far I like it, at least for what it is.
I’ve an SR40 and you can take the magazine disconnect out in about 5 min. google it and there’s plenty of videos showing how.
I love the SR40 and the 1911 style safety. I like having the extra insurance. If you don’t want to use it, don’t. Also 15 rounds or something that begins with a .4
Hi John- I am new to all of this and realize I might need a CCW and want something powerful and small. I am considering the Ruger SR40c instead of the SR9c. I bought the SR9 (regular size for the range) and now think that maybe a compact 40 might be a good buy for these days. I was wondering if you have any experience with the 40 or any other compact 40?.
Thanks,
Kris
Given that you seem to rust guns as well as I do, I’m very interested to hear how well that slide stands up to being carried while sweating.
I’m carrying OWB almost exclusively now. It’s cut down on rust in a big way, especially since nickel plating everything I own is a little difficult.
If you are having rust issues with your firearms, may I suggest Eezox? I’ve never seen anything work as well as Eezox and it does dry and still protects better than anything else.
You did better than I my friend. I told myself I wouldn’t buy anything more for the year two weeks ago. Alas, what did I go do two days ago? I picked up a GREAT deal on a 14.5″ BCM upper w/ pinned Battlecomp 1.5 on my way to building a second AR. Now if I can only find a great deal on a BCM lower assembly…
It’s been about 6 months now that you’ve owned the SR9, will you be doing a more in-depth analysis of this handgun? I was talking to a salesperson at a local store last weekend, and he was heavily suggesting the SR9 as an excellent all-around shooter and entry point for new people getting into handguns. He also had plenty of negative feedback on Glocks, which came as a surprise. After reading many of your entries and understanding your affinity towards Glocks, I’m very curious to hear your viewpoint is on this Ruger.
