KAC M4 RAS Heat Dissipation

I’ve updated my earlier heat dissipation graphs with the KAC M4 RAS. This is the railed handguard used by the US military on Colt M4 carbines and similar weapons. I did not have rail covers on the handguard during this test, because I was also comparing it to some other railed handguards.

Here are the handguard temps:

And the barrel/gas block temps:

Not only did the M4 RAS transmit less heat to the shooter’s non-firing hand, it also allowed the barrel to cool faster than the plastic handguards. This is in addition to its other benefits, such as mounting various accessories.

  1. I appreciate the time you took conducting this evaluation. It has been very helpful since the KAC is the brand I’m looking into for recommendation. Only downside is the price. Man, they are expensive. By the way, have you tested any fore end/ forearms/ hand guards similar to the KAC M4 RAS?

    • I tested the M4 RAS because it is the military standard, but over a decade since its adoption, I don’t know why any civilian would purchase it at retail when much better options are available for less money.

  2. I know this is an old article but i was wondering what your opinion is of the KAC factory seconds. Around $150 as opposed to the $400ish. would the rails be worth it then? just curious as im building a M16a4 clone and wondering if its worth it. Thank you for the time and effort you put into your articles.
