I saw a linkback to Balloon Goes Up which referenced my article on revolvers being criticized by Michael Bane of Downrange TV. My first thought was, “What did I get wrong?” I don’t know much about Michael Bane – anything, really.
In a podcast on Downrange TV (it’s 53 minutes long, the parts I quote are at about the 33:50 mark) he appears to be referencing my article, although I cannot be absolutely sure.
He starts off by saying that the article he found on the internet stated “If you use a revolver for self defense, what a moron you are.”
He later said that he had read in this internet article, “A revolver is not nearly as reliable as a semi auto, because if you open the cylinder and smash it against the door, it won’t work.” He compares this to “taking a cutting torch to a gun.” He takes it even further by mentioning alien attacks and plasma weapons.
Another quote from the article he is referring to was “Revolvers aren’t that reliable, because if you drop them with the cylinder open and then drive over them with a small tractor, the cylinder will snap right off.”
Just to be clear, here’s what I said in my article about revolvers. “Dropping a revolver with the cylinder open can render it nonfunctional.”
This is about as dry and objective as I can be. It is a simple and irrefutable statement of fact. Dropping a revolver with the cylinder open CAN (I should have said “may”) render it nonfunctional, and being aware of this fact is a good thing. There was no mention of tractors or aliens, or even snapping the cylinder off. For the record, my closing line in that article (“also, you’re insane“) was meant to be taken…partially…in jest. At no time did I say that people who carry revolvers are morons – for in fact I carry one quite often.
I contacted DownrangeTV about the podcast, and was told that “a number of blogs and forum posts were referenced.”
I specifically asked if my post was the inspiration for the podcast section, and received no answer.
