Just a heads up - If you have a Safeway grocery store in your area, you can make a contribution to the Wounded Warrior Project at checkout. I'm behind the curve, and this ends today. Sorry for the late notice.

My First Firearm Purchase in 14 Months…a Ruger SR9?
I must be out of my mind. I had a good streak going - no firearms purchases since September 2010. However, all good things must come to an end, and the vehicle of my no-buying-streak's destruction is a Ruger SR9. I don't know that I would ever have bought one of these, but the price was right, and it was brand new. On second thought, since I haven't paid for it yet (but have had it transferred to me), if I buy (transfer and pay for) another pistol before I… Read More
Sig Continues Series of Embarrassing Pistol Tender Failures
Last year, Sig Sauer's P250 lost the ATF handgun tender because of significant reliability issues. Sig's response was to improve the pistol - no, wait, their response was to appeal to the GAO, saying in part that the ATF put too much of an emphasis on reliability. The GAO promptly smacked Sig's claim down in a pretty embarrassing manner. Fast forward to this year, where Sig's big contract with the Dutch police for the P250 was pretty much the only thing the company had to crow about. Frankly, I was… Read More
For its 236th Birthday, the USMC Wants to Buy FMF Corpsmen a Gift
In case you didn't know, the Marine Corps was founded 236 years ago today, November 10, 1775, when Captain Samuel Nicholas was authorized to raise two battalions of Marines. Naturally, his first move was to go to a place called Tun Tavern (yes, it was an actual tavern) and start a recruitment drive. Happy Birthday, Marines! Enjoy your two beers, regardless of age. Fast forward to today, and the USMC is looking for a company to make the already-designed Corpsman Assault Pack, as GearScout reports. Hey, we've only been at… Read More
Maybe We Should Let The Air Force Concentrate On Cool Things They Want To Focus On, Like Lasers In Space…
...and not the transfer/disposal of KIA servicemembers' remains. Because they don't seem to be doing a very good job at keeping track of or treating with respect the remains of those who have died overseas while wearing the uniform of the United States military.
Firearm Choices for Home Defense
Hey, look! The first Vuurwapen Blog video in over a month! This is a short video that is not meant to discuss all aspects of firearms or accessories for home defense. It is a test vehicle for a new format that I have been developing. This format requires significantly less time to produce than previous formats. Please let me know what you think of it.
“Carry a Concealed Weapon,” Says Coolest Sheriff Ever
Here in Arizona, we have some pretty cool sheriffs - see Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu and Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever. We also have some stinkers, like Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik. But in South Carolina, Sheriff Chuck Wright may have just become the coolest sheriff ever. After a brutal attack by a repeat offender, Sheriff Wright urged women to walk in groups and get concealed weapons permits. Here are some of my favorite quotes: "Carry a concealed weapon. That'll fix it." "It's too bad someone with a concealed… Read More
Some Army Dude Wins A Small, Local Shooting Match With 300 Blackout
Rob Curtis at GearScout reports on the winner of something called the "USPSA Multigun National Championship". The shooter, Staff Sergeant Daniel Horner, used handloaded (if you can call loads made by the Army Marksmanship Unit "handloads") 155gr 300 AAC Blackout ammo and a 20" upper with a Swarovski scope. Want to know why he used handloads? I'm just guessing, but it might have something to do with the fact that the promised major manufacturer 300 Blackout ammo for a reasonable price is nowhere to be found. Oh, you're a handloader?… Read More
“You’re a Glock guy, right?”
Recently, I visited a local gun store. Not having purchased a firearm in over a year, I was in the store looking for nothing in particular. I handled quite a few different pistols, revolvers and rifles. None of them struck me as being worth buying, which is the main reason why it's been so long since I bought a firearm. Certainly, they were all quite nice (I didn't handle any Taurus products) and if I didn't own any firearms, I would most likely have walked out of the store with… Read More
LAPD SWAT Is Missing Some MP5s, And Would Like Them Back
If someone offers you a great deal on an MP5 in the next few days...my recommendation would be to pass. However, I'm thinking that by "blanks," the reporter meant Simunitions. Either way, not a great day for LAPD SWAT, and it makes me wonder how the thieves knew where to look for the weapons.
