Smoke Grenade Disappointment

A while back, I purchased three ALS G275 smoke grenades, intending to use them at some undetermined point. I decided to test one out late last year, and was very disappointed with its performance, as was everyone else who was watching. I was expecting the cloud of smoke I'd seen when using smoke grenades while on active duty, and as represented in ALS product photos. Instead, a small stream of white smoke was emitted for approximately 20-30 seconds, barely visible from the ground 25 yards away, let alone from an… Read More

Springfield XD as Beretta M9 Replacement?

This morning, I received, by email, a link to a post on humanevents.com. The author of the post states that the United States Marine Corps should adopt the Springfield XD-45 as a new service pistol. While I generally weigh what people have to say carefully, some of the comments he makes strike me as quite ridiculous, leading me to question much of his knowledge base on the subject. He bases this recommendation on three major points: 1. That the .45ACP cartridge is a massive improvement over the 9mm Parabellum cartridge.… Read More

Correction…

I incorrectly identified the bronze pin punch that is a prototype of an optional accessory to the Multitasker Tube as brass in my review - my apologies. It seems to work great for disassembling Glocks, by the way.

Voter Intimidation – It’s Bush’s Fault

I rarely stray from the subject of firearms on this blog. Today will be "one of those days". If you've had Fox News on in the past few days, or cruised right- or left-leaning blogs or websites in the same timeframe, you've probably come across reports that the Department of Justice has dropped portions of a voter intimidation case. Nightstick-wielding New Black Panther Party members stood 5 feet away from a Philadelphia polling place during the November 2008 election, verbally threatening voters and calling a black Republican poll watcher a… Read More

AR-15 Build Quality – Demand More

"All AR-15s are parts guns" - I don't know how many times I've heard that statement. I'll even admit to thinking that way once. It is, now that I've had time to think about my sins, wrong. What the people who say such things don't realize - or choose not to realize - is that the person who put the weapon together has a tremendous impact on the overall quality of the weapon. While the process of assembling one may seem really simple, it's also very simple to screw up.… Read More

Fake Tourniquets

Because I'm seething with rage at the moment, I won't write very much, other than that fake tourniquets, manufactured in China, are apparently finding their way into the hands of American servicemen overseas. These fake tourniquets cannot be used to control bleeding and have reportedly contributed to at least one fatality. They are intended to be indistinguishable (to the casual observer) from real CAT tourniquets currently in use. A PDF file of the differences between the two tourniquets can be found here. Please forward it to anyone you know who… Read More

Federal XM9HA Chronograph Test

In a recent AR15.com thread, it was claimed that Federal 9mm ammunition identified as XM9HA was a contract overrun of 147gr HST hollow point projectiles loaded to the impressive velocity of 1180 feet per second. That's 9mm Major territory - and beyond. It was also reported that this ammunition had a high rate of failures to feed or failures to fire in a variety of handguns. I was recently sent a small quantity of this ammunition for testing via a chronograph. It was requested that I use a Glock 19… Read More

PSA: Don’t Be an Idiot!

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words... Here are two cases I found at the range last week. On the left is a properly fired 7.62x54R case. On the right is a 7.62x54R case that was fired in a rifle which was decidedly NOT chambered in 7.62x54R! It should go without saying that this is dangerous and can end badly. If you feel resistance when chambering a cartridge, do yourself a favor and check out the round before you try to fire it. If you don't believe… Read More

Auto-Ordnance M1 Carbine

Some of you may notice that this post is not filed under "firearms" or "reviews" or even "tests". It's filed under "Lies, Errors, and Omissions." Why is that, you ask? Well, this firearm is an error. The company that made it is an error. I might even go so far as to say that the ancestors of the people who founded the company were also errors. But first, the firearm. It looks just like this. Yes, I stole Auto-Ordnance's photo. I had a pretty hard time finding .30 carbine ammo… Read More

A False Sense of Security

We've all seen the Brinks home security ads. Now, they're operating as Broadview Security - but the ads remain the same. Here's an example. There are a lot of illogical things in the video - one of the biggest things that stands out to me is the fact that the criminal is brazen enough to kick in a door in the middle of the day, while people are at home - whether you're in the backyard or not, that type of criminal isn't going to run away when they hear… Read More
