The Remington R51 Is Bigger Than You Think

I was excited to see the Remington R51 at SHOT, but then I saw it, and was no longer excited. Two reasons why. 1. Remington didn't bring any to Media Day (which, considering that they've had them at media events before, means only one thing: that the current iteration of pistols aren't reliable enough) 2. It's bigger than you've been led to believe. I made these comments on the blog's Facebook page, and shared a photo of the R51 next to a 1911. People told me I was wrong, and… Read More

The DeSantis Holster Company Greatly Annoys Me

Two reasons why: 1. They pay some link exchange site to spam my comments section with crap like this: 2. They steal my photos and use them without attribution: I have recommended their holsters in the past: I will do so no longer and will actively help quality manufacturers compete with DeSantis whenever possible. Were it not for the concealed carry boom in recent years, scumbags like DeSantis would have gone out of business long ago.

De Facto Gun Registration Exists In The United States

What is contained in this article is entirely anecdotal and I have no substantive proof of anything written here. I am not a conspiracy theorist, I am a realist. I have unintentionally collected this information over the last six or seven years. To me, it adds up to the ATF creating a database of who is buying what firearm. - In 2007, I had a chat with a very nice elderly couple, owners of a small gun store. They told me that during an ATF audit, the agents had scanned… Read More

Brief Thoughts On Hydration And Oral IV

I woke up this morning and saw a few links to this article about Oral IV. I found it interesting to read because a) SCIENCE!, and b) it mirrored my own experiences with Oral IV. Last year, during the 24 Hour Sniper Adventure Challenge, I used a packet, or four tubes, of Oral IV. I also consumed at least twenty liters of water, most of which was infused with Squinchers electrolyte powder. I felt no immediate boost when I used the Oral IV tubes (which I did not mix with… Read More

Credibility In The Gun World

You will notice that this blog often goes several days or weeks without updates. This is most often because I don't have anything to say which is worth a blog post. When I do have minor thoughts, I post them on Facebook or occasionally Twitter, where such content belongs. I don't have any advertising on this blog and it doesn't matter to me how many people visit it on a daily basis. This is not the model followed by many other firearm-related blogs. I have no disdain whatsoever for those… Read More

Why I Don’t Like The KRISS Vector

I first examined the KRISS Vector submachinegun at IWA in 2011. I did not understand why it needed to exist. I spent an evening at a Cuban cigar lounge in Nuremberg with some executives and tech guys from the company explaining my opinion to them. There was a former Swiss police officer who worked on the Sphinx pistol program (the companies are related) in attendance; he nodded as I spoke with a barely perceptible smile on his face. Essentially, I didn't see why something as large and heavy as the… Read More

Two Funny Firearm-Related Observations

I have a strange knack for observing and remembering odd details. This is offset by my inability to recall vitally important dates, names, and information. Anyway, here are two things that made me chuckle recently. First, the guy who wrote this, George Hill, now works for an AR15 manufacturer. Next, in this video, Rob Pincus tells us that free floating a barrel will deliver greater accuracy. He shows two targets with the label "Normal vs. Free Floated Barrels," but the bottom of the left target is labeled "M16A4" and the right… Read More

Fire Superiority Is The Best Medicine On The Battlefield

I was recently sent a photo of some civilian carbine/vehicle training. Some of the things I saw in the photo bothered me, and I'd like to discuss why. First, I should probably cover my background, as in the past not doing so has led some people to assume that I did not have relevant experience, although the "about me" link above has the relevant information. I was an FMF Corpsman (8404) and deployed to Anbar province for essentially all of 2006. I have treated injuries ranging from those caused by… Read More

Why I Don’t Like The “Armed Citizen Project”

As a resident of the Tucson area, I have seen several local news reports about the "Armed Citizen Project," an organization which plans to distribute free shotguns to low income residents of high crime areas. I looked into the project further, and do not like it. Here is why. - The shotguns they choose are single shot break actions. The usefulness of this type of firearm for defense is debatable, but several of their stated reasons for selecting it are fallacious. The single shot break action is chosen because it… Read More

SOCOM Has Defective Body Armor

So there's this site called GearScout, and it's run by a real journalist named Rob Curtis. Using his keen sense of journalistic smell, he discovered that SOCOM's armor plates are defective. "They don't stop bullets" defective, not "they might discolor in sunlight" defective. The solution is...well there really is no solution. Bad plates are being identified through the highly scientific method of SOCOM dudes tapping their plates before every mission and listening for a "ting" instead of a "thud." Yes, every mission. The problem is described as a "latent delamination… Read More
