I've spent some time hanging out at West Coast Armory with a friend recently, and the (very polite) staff has inexplicably given me access to the whole facility, including their multiple indoor ranges and open bays for "action" shooting. I began comparing WCA to Scottsdale Gun Club as soon as I arrived. SGC has a wider firearm selection - both rental and sales - but I was treated with respect at WCA, whereas at Scottsdale Gun Club, I'm almost always ignored or treated as if I don't know anything about guns.… Read More

Flying with Firearms in General Aviation Aircraft
Are you a pilot? Do you own guns (probably, if you read my blog)? Check out the article I wrote for LuckyGunner Labs on the legal and practical issues to flying with firearms and ammunition.
Revolvers Are Not Perfect, Or, The Problem With Revolver Fanatics
The only Dillon Blue Press article I've ever read was a passioned defense of the revolver, which criticized automatics for being finicky and unreliable. Revolvers were described as essentially perfect, although the author conceded that automatics could carry more rounds between reloads. I have since thrown away all the Blue Presses I get, with the exception of the one that had Julie Goloski-Golob on the cover (she's no fake "gun girl"), and the one with my friend Meredith on the cover with one of her 50 BMGs (she's also no fake "gun… Read More
Why I Like the SCAR-H/SCAR-17S
This is not a review of the SCAR-H or SCAR-17S. It is a brief explanation of why I like the weapon system. It could almost be condensed into a Facebook post - but not quite. I will avoid a technical discussion in the interests of brevity. Put simply, the 7.62X51 SCAR does what it was intended to do at a competitive price. Although the AR-10 platform preceded the AR-15 platform, the latter has had considerably more refinement, development, and market competition. Thus, you are able to purchase a 5.56 AR-15… Read More
Why the Glock 19 is a Near-Perfect Handgun For Me
Perfection is okay. Also, here's why I think the Glock 19 is nearly perfect.
I Don’t Like This Titanium AR Thing
So there is a titanium .308 AR out there, and the manufacturer wants an absurd amount of money for it. I don't like it, and here's why. - Titanium is lighter than steel, but a good bit heavier than aluminum. Essentially every component of the rifle that has been machined from titanium would previously have been aluminum. The net result is a needlessly heavier rifle. - The one named steel component that has now been made from titanium is the bolt carrier, which is nonsensical. In my opinion, .308 ARs… Read More
AR-15 Muzzle Device Discussion
An off-the-cuff, unscripted video discussing various muzzle devices, with some high speed and HD range video thrown in for good measure.
My Letter to an AK Manufacturer
This email was sent to the contact address on the Colorado Gun Sales website on 3/21/12; no response has been received. To whom it may concern, I recently purchased one of your M10 rifles in 5.45 from AIM Surplus. It arrived on Monday evening and I am now, as of Wednesday afternoon, shipping it back to AIM for a refund. I wish to inform you of some issues I saw with the rifle so that you may improve future production runs. I do not expect any action on your part.… Read More
Why Glock? Why Not the M&P?
As a reformed M&P fan, I feel that I have to provide a counter-opinion to her opinion. Don't get me wrong - I think that the M&P pistol could certainly be a Glock-beater. It just isn't at this point in time, as far as I am concerned (and this is coming from someone who has carried an M&P revolver for years and previously owned multiple M&P pistols). In order to understand why I feel this way, let's look at why Glock is successful, and where I feel the M&P falls… Read More
I Wrote an Article About Shotgun Ammunition a While Back
Several months back I wrote an article about shotgun ammunition, and just realized that I had forgotten to link to it. Here it is. It was intended to give people who don't have a huge firearm knowledge base an understanding of the topic, but several people who have been shooters for a while told me that they still learned a few things.
