Great description on the trigger break. That’s the reason I never gave this gun a very good chance. I’m surprised to hear that you carry this IWB and own a variety of other (presumably) carry pistols, as well. How many different types of pistols do you carry on a frequent basis and are you worried about different “muscle memories” in an emergency situation from carrying different styles?
Good question. That’s something I used to do a lot and had to break myself from – carrying a variety of handguns. Nowadays, I carry a Glock or a 1911 as a primary carry handgun – most of the time, it’s a Glock 22 Gen 4. If I’m exercising or whatnot, I’ll carry a J frame. Recently, I’ve been carrying this BHP more on an evaluation basis around the house than anything else – I’ve always liked BHPs, but there were a few glaring issues that prevented me from carrying them.
The BHP is similar enough in operation to the 1911 that I don’t really worry about that – and I tend to make the same movements/have the same thumb position whether I’m shooting a Glock or 1911, so I don’t think deactivating a safety would be an issue.
The big thing is the trigger – while I can pick up a 1911 or a Glock and do pretty well, this BHP is different enough that it affects my ability to put rounds on target. If it’s not something that I can work through to the point that I’m very confident in my ability to shoot it accurately, I’ll leave it in the safe from here on out.
Great blog. Where can I get the device you put on the gun? thanks
The BHP is famous for igniting hard primers without fault. I wonder if this conversion makes a difference…
I have a Browning High Power that has been to the Cylinder and Slide Shop where they removed the magazine safety and did a trigger job and it now has as fine a trigger break as one could possibly hope for. You know, breaks like an icicle…blah blah. But really; it is completely fantastic. I had to submit a waiver of liability letter if my memory serves. I never completely understood how much a superb trigger could affect speed and accuracy before, but it transforms the pistol in my opinion.
It is great to see that others are aware of this great improvement to the Hi-Power! I have a custom Hi-Power in .357 SIG, with a black slide and tan body. I love Hi-Powers, there isn’t really a need a more staggered magazine, I can live with 10 rounds and a thin grip.
Ever tried the 15 round flush fit Hi Power magazines by Mec Gar?
